Description

Numbers 21-36 Burgh Street are a terrace of houses built in 1847, as indicated by the date inscribed on the stepped parapet of number 29. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond, with stucco detailing, and have roofs hidden behind the parapets. They are two or three storeys high, with a basement, and originally featured two windows to each property. The terrace is designed as a symmetrical group, but is incomplete to the southwest, with number 29 serving as a central feature.

Number 29 has a distinctive segmental-arched entrance with Roman Doric columns supporting a cornice, a fanlight, and a panelled door of original design. It also features a round-arched ground-floor window with original glazing and margin lights, and flat-arched upper windows with moulded stucco architraves and consoles. The stepped parapet is flanked by scrolled consoles and bears the inscription 'CMP 1847'.

The general design of the terrace includes stuccoed basement and ground floors. Number 35 has smooth stucco, while number 36 is entirely rendered in stucco scored to resemble ashlar. Chamfered rustication is present on the ground floors of the other properties. Steps lead to flat-arched entrances with fluted quarter-columns, cornices, and overlights, and panelled doors of original design are present at numbers 21, 23, 25, 27, 30-34. Ground-floor windows are flat-arched with vermiculated keystones, and window guards are present at numbers 24, 28-29. Number 35’s ground-floor window has triple sashes. The first-floor windows are round-arched with gauged brick heads, and window guards are present at numbers 23-24, 28-30, and 32. Numbers 24-34 have a third storey with flat-arched windows and gauged brick heads. The original sashes remain, with radiating glazing bars to the first floor of numbers 21-22, the ground floor of number 23, the ground and first floors of number 25, and the ground floors of numbers 26, 27, and 30-34. A stucco cornice and blocking course is present at numbers 23-36, with a parapet only on numbers 21-22. Number 23 has a mansard roof with two dormers. Number 35 has a roof extension. Cast-iron railings are present along the steps and area.
