Description

Birchwood Mansions is a block of flats built in 1907 by W J and William Collins in an Arts & Crafts style. The building features red brick, with some areas of tile-hanging and pebble dashing, and has plain tiled roofs. It stands three storeys high with attics and has a symmetrical design that is irregular in form.

The main façade showcases three entrances, with the central entrance topped by strip windows on the first and second floors, which are divided by mock-framing and supported by brackets. This central bay is flanked by two chimney stacks that project from the wall. On either side of the central bay are double-gabled sections that include a variety of window types, such as canted oriels on the third floor, triangular oriels on the second floor, and two-storey square bays on the ground and first floors.

Additionally, there are entrance bays on either side, featuring tile-hung gabled jetties over strip windows on the first floor, which are set above wide segmental brick arches. These bays, like the central bay, also have flanking chimney stacks that project slightly. The outermost bays consist of plain brickwork, with second-floor windows that turn the corner of the building. All windows are original; where they are not oriel or square-bay types, they are predominantly cross casement with segment heads. The doors are panelled and half-glazed.
