Description

W Martyn is a grocer's shop located on the ground floor, dating from the late 19th century. The exterior features a shop front with two plate-glass windows set in narrow white metal frames, above low black Vitrolite stallrisers. There is an off-centre lobby made of plate glass, which includes a white mosaic floor displaying the shop's name in black, and a wooden-framed glazed door with margin lights. Above the windows are five transom lights made of etched glass, with a black Vitrolite fascia that displays "W. MARTYN" in crimson raised block capitals. The awnings are modern replacements that mimic the style of the original 1930s design. The shop front is flanked by 1890s pink granite pilasters on grey granite plinths, topped with ornate pedimented acanthus-leafed console brackets made of Bath stone, all in the Queen Anne style.

Inside, the shop has a hardwood boarded floor and dark tongue and groove matchboard panelling, which is largely covered by high-quality mahogany shelving that occupies three sides of the available wall space. The shelving features moulded tops, decorative candy-twist columns, and fluted pilasters, although some horizontal shelves have been replaced over time. A serving counter runs along the right-hand side of the shop, with display shelves in front. Behind the counter, there are semi-circular metal storage bins with hinged wooden lids, along with four drawers situated between each bin. The rear wall includes a hatch leading to a cash desk and a door that connects to a stock room, which also has wooden shelving, though not all of it is original. A late 20th-century suspended ceiling is present but is not of special interest.
