Description
St James's Church Hall is a church hall built in 1925 by the architect Grey Wornum. It features red brick construction with Portland stone dressings and a slate roof, designed in a rectangular plan that includes two halls, with the larger one being double-height.
The exterior showcases a main hall with shaped gables at both ends, although the gable facing Fortis Green Road is truncated. There is a Baroque window surround with a broken pediment above a nine-light mullioned window on the Fortis Green Road side. Below this window, a foundation stone was laid on 26th September 1925. The Birchwood Avenue elevation includes clerestorey windows. A link section features a projecting porch with another Baroque door surround, also with a broken pediment, which encloses a pair of panelled doors with glazing at the upper level. To the left, a two-storey section is set at right angles to the main hall, featuring another shaped gable with a Baroque window surround above a small window facing Birchwood Avenue. The south-west return has five casement windows at first floor height and a dormer at the rear end.
Inside, the main features are the two halls, which retain impressive roofs with moulded braces. The joinery is of high quality, including fielded doors and panelling. There is another foundation stone located inside the hall, along with a small war memorial plaque.
Designed by the notable architect Grey Wornum, this church hall is a distinctive example of early 20th century suburban architecture. The original design was modified during construction.
