Description

The Duke of Cumberland Public House is a public house built in 1892, designed by architect R. Cruwys. This corner building has three storeys plus an attic with dormers, featuring three bays on each side. It is constructed of red brick with artificial stone dressing and has a slate roof. The building is topped with three prominent brick stacks that have artificial stone caps. At the first-floor level, there is an intermittent stone balustrade and parapet. The central frontispieces at the parapet level are in Baroque style, featuring broken segmental arches, swan neck gablets that intersect with a modillion cornice, and volutes. The upper storey has round-arched windows, while the second storey has pairs of flat-arched windows separated by granite colonnettes. The ground floor projects out towards New Kings Road and extends back along Peterborough Road, where there was a former billiard room.

Inside, the public house features cast-iron columns that are fluted and topped with Composite capitals, supporting a timber grid that indicates the original subdivisions of the space. The original bar is made of polished wood, with swollen brackets and an arched superstructure adorned with ornamental carving above. To the right of the bar, there is an original fire surround. The area in front of the bar has a complete tiled wall divided into three compartments by decorative borders, with a central tiled plaque in each compartment depicting a figure in medieval dress. The interior is noted for being unusually complete.
