Description
Carnegie Central Library is a library built in 1905 by Henry T Hare, featuring sculpture by F E E Schenck. The building has two storeys and is constructed of Portland stone and red brick. The entrance is aligned with the main axis and is flanked by an Ionic colonnade at the first floor, which is situated between end pavilions that have Palladian windows on the first floor and open pediments above. A cupola with a vane crowns the structure. The library is adorned with fine sculptural ornaments, including figures of Shakespeare and Milton, as well as reliefs representing literature, art, industry, and science. Notable internal features include a glazed barrel vault with plaster reliefs. The commission for the library was won in a limited competition.
