Description

The boundary wall and public conveniences attached to Hackney Town Hall were built between 1934 and 1937 by the architectural firm Lanchester & Lodge. The structure features Portland stone cladding over Flemish bond brick.

The exterior includes a wall that surrounds the car park to the north of the town hall, connected to the town hall by gates and gate piers. The wall is made of coursed ashlar on the exterior faces and has plain bevelled coping. At the north-east corner, the wall extends to include the public conveniences, which run from the south to the east gate piers and feature a stretch of screen wall south of the entrance to the gentlemen's facilities.

The single-storey conveniences have the ladies' entrance set at a canted angle in the north-east corner. This entrance features a square-headed doorway that is set back from the corner, with a rebated surround and a three-panelled timber door. There is a similar blind canted end at the south-east corner. The gentlemen's entrance is located in the centre of the east wall and has similar architectural details to the ladies' entrance. A moulded stone cornice runs below a low parapet, and the flat leaded roof has a raised ventilation lantern that runs north-south, with bottom-hung metal windows.

The north return of the building has 22-light metal casements, while the east elevation has no windows. The south return features three similar casements, and the east elevation includes 12 single-light metal casements.

Inside, the ladies' facilities contain four cubicles with four-panelled doors, original cisterns, but with chinaware from the 1970s. There is a cleaner's store to the east. The gentlemen's facilities include 12 urinal bays from the 1930s and five cubicles with four-panelled doors, along with a cleaner's store to the west.

The wall and public conveniences are part of a group with Hackney Town Hall.
