Description
The Hunter Family Tomb is a chest tomb located in the St John at Hackney Churchyard Gardens, made of Portland stone. This mid-19th century tomb features fluted angle pilasters with reeding at the bottom and inscription panels that are surrounded by incised borders with inset corners. It has a moulded ledger slab. The tomb commemorates Captain John Hunter, a British Naval officer and the second Governor of the New South Wales colony in Australia, who lived from 1737 to 1821. The tomb is of particular historic interest and has group value with the Grade II* Church of St. John at Hackney and other listed monuments in the churchyard.
