Description
Shelter House is a building constructed between 1900 and 1901 by architects Gordon and Gunton for Hackney Borough Council. It was designed to accommodate people while their belongings were being cleansed. The building is two stories high, made of red brick with stone detailing, and features an Arts and Crafts style. It has a high, hipped roof topped with a central stack, covered with modern concrete tiles. The windows are mullion and transom style, and there are arched openings on the left and right, each adorned with decorative iron railings and a curved stone hood above. The building is flanked by swollen stone buttresses on either side. Additionally, it has twin gables that display a blind oeil-de-boeuf motif in stone. Shelter House is listed for its group value with the disinfecting station.
