Description

The monument commemorates Agnes Forsyth and dates from 1861 to 1864. Built of pale yellow limestone, it stands on a base of red sandstone with granite colonnettes. A roundel depicting a young girl is set within a trefoil-headed arch, flanked by colonnettes, and is topped by a steeply pitched roof displaying arched decoration. The word "AGNES" is inscribed on the front. The reverse side includes a relief depicting Christ blessing children. The monument was designed and sculpted by James Forsyth, Agnes's father and a prominent sculptor of the mid-19th century. It serves as a moving example of a Victorian memorial to a young child.
