Description

Nos 1 to 6 Lombard Street, built between 1908 and 1915 by Dunn and Watson with W Curtis Green, features a symmetrical stone facade that curves to follow the street's line. The building has five main storeys and two dormered roof storeys, arranged in 17 bays (3+11+3) with slightly projecting end pavilions. The tall channelled arcuated base encompasses the lower two storeys, with each arch containing iron railings for the basement windows and stone balustrades for the mezzanine (first) floor windows.

A giant Corinthian order unites the second, third, and fourth floors, featuring attached unfluted columns and a richly carved entablature with a dentilled and modillioned cornice, along with lion masks in the cyma. The crowning balustrade includes plain dies, turned balusters, and a moulded capping. The end pavilions are emphasized by a tripartite treatment, with a central ground floor opening flanked by Byzantine columns that support an enriched lintel and cornice, along with channelled quoin piers on the upper storeys.

The central tripartite feature on the main facade includes a tall arched opening leading to a coffered turret vaulted entrance, flanked by two-storey narrower openings that match those of the end pavilions. There are balconies with iron balustrades for all third-floor windows, and the slated roof is not prominent behind the crowning balustrade. To the left of the symmetrical 17-bay facade, there is a lower four-storey corner block that is circular in plan and contains another entrance. The facade also returns to St Swithin's Lane.
