Description

Nos. 13 and 14 Cornhill, built in 1910, are office buildings designed by architect J.G. Gibson. They feature a parapetted roof and rise nine storeys above a basement. The façade has a three-window range with flat arched openings, except where noted. The ground and first floors are treated as a base, the third to fifth floors as the middle section, and the sixth floor and above as the crown. Stylised Ionic pilasters adorn the party walls at the ground floor, with pilaster strips defining the first-floor ranges. An entablature with a frieze of wreaths is present, and the second floor exhibits banded rustication, while a sill band is located at the third floor. The upper floors have two-storey architraves, with the centre window of the fourth floor featuring a segmental arch and a segmental pediment with a raking cornice. A projecting cornice with over-scaled mutules is found at the fifth floor, with garlanded shields between each window. The sixth floor has an iron railing, with the centre window being round arched and set in a segmental pediment, flanked by stone dormers that form balconies on the seventh floor. The central section of the building concludes with a triumphal arch motif inspired by the work of Lutyens in New Delhi. A roof extension added in the late 20th century is not of special interest.
