Description
The Sugar Loaf Public House is located on the corner of Cannon Street and Queen Street and dates from the early 19th century. It is built of brick in Flemish bond, with header bond used on the rebated and curved corner section. The ground floor features stucco with banded rustication and the building has a parapetted roof. It stands three storeys tall with an attic over a basement.
The façade has a four-window range, with a one-window range at the corner and return. Most openings are flat arched. The entrance is located on the corner, with two additional entrances on Cannon Street. The ground floor is defined by rusticated pilasters and has a plain sign fascia below a projecting cornice. The first-floor windows on the corner and flanking ranges are set within tripartite aedicules, which are vertically gathered under giant, round-arched recesses. The second-floor windows are segmental arched to match the intrados of the arch, with the corner window featuring an architrave. There is a sill band on the recessed wall only.
The attic and corner ranges are articulated by coupled pilasters, with a recess between the third and fourth window ranges that highlights the unusual corner treatment. A stack is positioned in the outer wall in line with this recess. There is an entablature band at the second floor and attic, and the second-floor and attic windows have original sashes designed in a 3 by 3 configuration.
