Description
The Church of St Mary Aldermary, located on Queen Victoria Street, is a Grade I listed building dating from the late 17th century, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. It incorporates elements from the early 16th and early 17th centuries, particularly in its tower. The church is built in the Perpendicular Gothic style and features an aisled body with six bays, a clerestory, and a very short chancel. The southwest tower is notable for its octagonal, panelled turrets topped with ogee caps and a pierced parapet. The exterior is constructed from Portland stone, with buttresses and a south doorway added in the 19th century. The chancel is adorned with a pair of elaborate finials. There is a northeast vestry and adjoining buildings at the northwest corner.
Inside, the church boasts a rich fan vault in plaster, complemented by shallow domes. The spandrels of the arcade feature further plaster enrichment. The interior also includes 19th-century Gothic panelling, a reredos, pews, and an organ case. Notable late 17th-century elements include a carved pulpit, a doorway at the west end, a font, and a railing, along with various wall monuments.
