Description
The former offices of the Bridewell Hospital, built around 1805 by James Lewis, is a classical building featuring a front made of Portland stone. It stands three storeys tall with three windows. The ground storey is channelled and has three arched openings. Above this, there are Doric pilasters that extend through the second storey, supporting a pediment that contains a coat of arms in the tympanum. The windows on the first and second storeys have decorative dressings, and the front area is enhanced by railings and lamp standards. The rear elevation is irregular, consisting of two storeys made of yellow brick with slight stone dressings.
Inside, wrought-iron gates lead into a barrel-vaulted passage that originally provided access to a courtyard at the back. On either side of the passage are doorways with ornamental fanlights, and it is illuminated by a lantern on a bracket that spans the gap between the doors. The right-hand doorway opens into a hall featuring an elegant cantilevered staircase, while the front room on this side includes a marble fireplace with inset 'cameos'. The left-hand doorway leads to a self-contained unit with two ground floor and two basement rooms; the ground floor front room has a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Delicate plaster cornices and plain early 19th-century fireplaces can still be seen in some of the first and ground floor rooms.
