Description

19 St Swithin's Lane is a late 18th century mansion that was remodeled around 1900 and features a medieval cellar, likely from the 14th century. The building has glazed tiles on the street facade and brown brick at the rear. It is seven windows wide and consists of three storeys plus an attic, with the entrance located to the right. The main cornice above the second floor, which is probably original, includes sheep skulls in the frieze, and there is a guilloche band at the parapet. The square-headed windows on the ground floor, dating from around 1900, have large granite surrounds.

The interior has been remodeled, except for the cellar in the sub-basement, which is barrel-vaulted and runs parallel to the street facade for the entire length of the building. The cellar is constructed mainly of squared chalk blocks, with narrower courses of flint and tile at intervals in the walls, and is partly rendered. The vault is blocked at both ends with later brick walls, and there are Victorian brick supporting arches at intervals. This cellar is adjacent to, and probably adjoins, the cellar in number 20, making it a rare survival.
