Description
Lyndhurst House Preparatory School is a detached house built around 1886 by Harry Measures for William Willett and Son, who were builder-developers. The building features a red brick ground floor, while the upper floors are constructed of yellow brick with red brick dressings and pilasters at the corners. It has tiled hipped and gabled roofs with dormers, tall and elaborately patterned brick chimney-stacks, and a brick cornice with modillions. The design is asymmetrical.
The exterior consists of three and two storeys, with attics and a semi-basement. The windows are arranged irregularly, with three visible. On the right side, there is a projecting gabled bay that includes a four-light canted bay window, which has a continuous bracketed sill at the ground floor and small stained glass top lights. This bay extends from the semi-basement to the first floor and culminates in a large rectangular bay on the second floor, which is tile-hung and features a three-light window with glazing bars in the top lights, along with a small attic window in a timber-framed gable that has a moulded bargeboard.
On the left side, the entrance bay projects and has a brick gabled portico with a strip of four small lights above a shaped arch entrance. This entrance is approached by steps with curved balustrades and features a panelled part-glazed door with a radial patterned fanlight and sidelights. To the left of the entrance, there is a transom and mullion window with stained glass. The first floor has two windows with 20th-century glazing flanking a central chimney-stack, which is made of rubbed brick and has a cartouche and three recessed panels. This chimney rises through the centre of a tile-hung gable that has small flanking windows. The interior has not been inspected.
