Description

The Maria Montessori Training Organisation is a detached house, built around 1886 by Harry Measures for William Willett and Son, who were builder-developers. The building is now used as a school. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the upper floors are made of yellow brick with red brick dressings and pilasters at the corners. It features terracotta and rubbed brick decorations, a tiled hipped roof with dormers, a gable on the right-hand bay, and tall brick slab chimney stacks with panelling and cornices. The design is asymmetrical.

The exterior consists of three and two storeys, with attics and a semi-basement. The windows are arranged irregularly, with three on the upper floor. All first-floor sashes have glazing bars only on the top halves, while the ground floor features casements with stained glass top lights. The right-hand projecting gabled bay includes a canted bay of casements and sashes that rise from the semi-basement through the first floor. The ground floor has gauged brick heads, a shaped keystone, and a bracketed continuous sill. The first floor showcases an enriched terracotta frieze that runs across the facade, along with a balustrade above the second-floor window of tripartite sashes, which also has gauged brick heads and a keystone, flanked by pilasters at the corners supporting the gable. The gable is adorned with bands of red brickwork, projecting stepped tiles, a keyed oculus, and a terracotta dragon finial.

The central entrance bay slightly projects and features a portico with rubbed brick half-columns that support an enriched frieze and pediment. The round-arched entrance has a part-glazed panelled door with sidelights and a radial patterned fanlight, accessed by steps with a curved balustrade. The first floor has paired sashes with a frieze and balustrade above, similar to the arrangement in the left-hand recessed bay on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.
