Description
Upper Frognal Lodge is a coach house that dates from around 1745 to 1750, originally built for Henry Flitcroft's house at Nos 105-111 Frognal, and is now a semi-detached house. The building has been altered in the early 19th century and late 20th century. It is constructed of stucco and has three storeys.
The front facing Frognal features two windows, while the main south garden and entrance front has three windows and a two-storey, two-window extension. The Frognal front includes recessed sash and casement windows with early 19th-century Gothic and later glazing. The first-floor windows are round-arched with a central niche and a cast-iron balcony, and the ground floor has a central sash window flanked by rusticated pilaster strips and a round-arched window to the right. The entrance on the south front is a 20th-century segmental arch with a fanlight, sidelight, and a half-glazed door. The first-floor windows are set in round-arched recesses.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is noteworthy that this building was the home of Ramsay MacDonald, the first Labour Prime Minister, from 1925 to 1937, and during the 1950s, it was the residence of Donald Ogden Stewart, an American screenwriter and refugee from McCarthyism.
