Description

A terrace of eleven houses forming part of a crescent, built between approximately 1821 and 1832 by I Bryant for the Southampton Estate. The end houses are stuccoed with rusticated ground floors, while the others are yellow brick (number 33 being reddened), also with rusticated stucco ground floors. They have slate mansard roofs with segmental-headed dormers, except for number 27 which has square dormers. Originally a symmetrical terrace, the end houses at numbers 25 and 26 and 35 formerly projected slightly, although number 36 has been replaced by 20th-century flats. The end houses are four storeys and have basements; the others are three storeys with attics and basements. Each house has two windows, with number 25 having a three-window return. The ground floor openings are round-arched, with the sashes of the end houses set in shallow recesses. Number 34 has pointed and margin lights, while number 35 has margin lights. Doorways are generally framed by three-quarter Doric columns supporting cornice heads, with fanlights (patterned at numbers 26, 27, 30-32 and 35) and panelled doors. Number 25 features a prostyle portico on its return front. The first-floor windows have cast-iron balconies, and the end houses have enriched architraves, except for number 25. The second and third-floor sashes of the end houses also have enriched architraves, again with the exception of number 25. Other windows have gauged brick flat arches. Number 29 has wooden architraves and first-floor blind boxes. Numbers 26 and 35 have cornices at third-floor level (removed at number 25) and parapets above the third floor, while the remaining properties have stucco blocking courses; numbers 29, 31 and 34 retain their cornices. The interiors were not inspected. Attached to the property are cast-iron railings with urn finials to the areas.
