Description
A pair of semi-detached houses, built around 1845 by Henry Bassett, situated at the top of Gloucester Crescent. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with stucco dressings, and have a tiled pitched roof. A central chimney stack is enriched, with smaller lateral stacks; projecting eaves are supported by large, shaped brackets with a plain band. The houses extend over two storeys, with semi-basements. Each house has two windows, with recessed two-window, two-storey entrance bays. The entrances have stucco surrounds with pilasters supporting architraved, round-arched heads, and feature panelled doors with pilaster jambs and fanlights. The windows are recessed sashes. Ground floor central bays have stucco architraves, baseless pediments on shaped brackets, and geometrically patterned timber balconies. First-floor sashes are architraved with bracketed sills. The interiors were not inspected. Bassett’s family were surveyors to the Southampton Estate and purchased the Gloucester Crescent plot from Lord Southampton in 1840.
