Description

The monument to General Sir Loftus Otway, who died in 1854, is located in Highgate (Western) Cemetery. It is a rusticated mausoleum made of Portland stone, featuring a pediment, frieze, and wreaths. The mausoleum has a cast-iron six-panel door set within a lugged surround, leading to a triangular vault enclosed by a low rusticated wall. The original railings, designed in the form of reversed guns, were removed when the site was inspected in 1994. Inside the crypt, there are several tiers of slate shelves that support coffins. General Otway was a cavalry officer known for his service in the Peninsular War.
