Description
Caroline House is a semi-detached house built in the mid-18th century and refronted in the early 20th century in a Georgian style. The building is constructed from multi-coloured stock brick and features a brick band at the first-floor level. It has three storeys and a basement, with two windows. The entrance includes an architraved doorway topped with a bracketed hood. The windows have gauged brick flat arches, with the first-floor arches being rusticated and the second-floor arches featuring moulded key blocks. The house has a parapet. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this house is notable for appearing in Ford Maddox Brown's painting "Work," created in 1852, which was inspired by observing navvies working on Hampstead's main drainage.
