Description

Numbers 8 to 14 Goodge Place consist of seven terraced houses built between 1766 and 1767, and altered since. They were originally built for Jacob Leroux, architect, and numbers 8 and 9 were restored in 1989. The houses are constructed of darkened multi-coloured stock brick, with number 8 having a refaced brickwork facade and numbers 9, 10 and 12 having repointed or refaced upper floors. The ground floors are stuccoed, with a first-floor band running across the frontages.

The houses are four storeys high, with two windows each. Most windows have gauged red brick flat arches, recessed sash windows with some exposed boxing and glazing bars. Parapets top the facades. Numbers 10 to 12 feature wooden doorcases with pilasters supporting an entablature and pediment, atop arched fanlights and panelled doors. Number 13 has a stucco door surround with pilasters and a pediment, a rectangular fanlight and a panelled door. Number 14 retains remnants of a shop front with an entablature and projecting cornice, and a projecting shop window with signs of larger panes; the house and shop doorways have square heads with fanlights, and doors are boarded up.

The interiors of numbers 8 and 9 retain some panelling, original fireplaces and other original features. Number 8 has panelling in the back hall with a painted roundel of a hound’s head, inscribed with the initials CF. There are traces in the front hall of a painted roundel, likely depicting a vase of flowers.

Attached cast-iron railings have torch flambe, urn or foliated finials. The group value of the buildings lies in their uniformity and contribution to the historic streetscape.
