Description

No. 22 Tower Street is a former board school, now converted into offices, dating from around 1874 and altered in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with red brick and stone dressings, featuring steep slated roofs with gabled end bays, tall brick chimney-stacks, and parapets.

The exterior is mainly four storeys high and has a somewhat asymmetrical arrangement of windows in a 2:1:3:1:2 pattern, with projecting end bays. To the left of the entrance is a five-storey bell tower bay. The façade includes moulded floor strings, and the central three bays are divided by pilasters that support a parapet adorned with blind panels. The third and fourth floors are set back and feature a late 20th-century glazed wall with a curved roof beneath original lunettes.

The main entrance is highlighted by a stucco doorcase with paired banded pilasters, an entablature, and a rectangular overdoor flanked by ball finials, which support a scrolled pediment with a ball finial. The round-arched doorway contains a panelled door and fanlight. Most of the windows are round-arched with keystones, while those beside the overdoor have gauged brick flat arches. The left-hand bay on the fourth floor features a window with an apron of three carved stone plaques decorated with floral and foliar designs, inscribed "For LSB," and the left-hand bay has a similar window apron inscribed "1874."

On the right-hand return, a chimney-stack rises the full height of the building, showcasing two pedimented features. At the third-floor level, to the left of the chimney, there is a carved stone plaque set in a rubbed red brick surround, depicting an angel showing a book to two young children. The interior has been altered.
