Description

This is a mid-1830s terraced shop with living accommodation above, located on Earlham Street in Camden. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with red brick detailing. It features a timber shopfront with a central entrance consisting of a panelled and part-glazed door and overlight, flanked by plate-glass windows with battered panelled risers. A slightly recessed house entrance is located to the left, with a panelled door and overlight. The shopfront is topped by an entablature that includes a fluted bracket on the right side. The upper floor windows are sash windows with red brick segmental arches, with the first floor retaining its original unhorned sashes. A parapet tops the building. A round-arched enamel sign is set between the first-floor windows, inscribed "Established 1835/F.W. Collins/Elastic Glue Manufacturer (Sole Inventor 1857)/Leather, Grindery & General Ironmonger/Warehouse". The interior of the shop retains its original features. Historical records indicate that a Mr. W. Collins, a boot blocker, was first recorded at the premises in 1842.
