Description

This is a church school built in 1901. Designed by Philip Robson, it was constructed to accommodate schools established in the mid-19th century by the first vicar of St Mary Magdalene Church, located nearby. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and is in a modified Queen Anne style incorporating Art Nouveau influences. It has a slate roof.

The exterior features two storeys and a semi-basement with three window bays. The left side has an entrance and a full-height, canted oriel window with pilasters defining the angles. A small mezzanine level is incorporated, with segmental-arched casement windows; those on the first floor have segmental hoodmoulds that join at the pilasters. To the right, gauged brick segmental arches frame wide tripartite windows on the ground floor. The keystones of these arches form the base of V-shaped aprons beneath the narrow first-floor transom and mullion casement windows, which themselves have stone segmental hoodmoulds supported by brackets above gauged brick heads. A parapet projects around the oriel, all adorned with a good Art Nouveau cast-iron balustrade. A shaped stone date plaque featuring a Maltese cross is positioned between the ground-floor windows. A cast-iron rainwater head to the right is enriched with a lily design and inscribed "St. M.".

The interior was not inspected. Attached to the building are good quality cast-iron railings in an Art Nouveau style, featuring tree motifs.
