Description
The White House is a former serviced flats building, now a hotel, constructed in 1936 by Robert Atkinson. It features a steel frame clad in pale cream faience tiles, with slightly darker tiles on the ground floor and in bands. The building has a star-shaped plan designed to provide optimal light and ventilation without the need for light-wells. It stands nine storeys tall, with diagonal blocks that have chamfered angles and central triangular bays extending above the roof line. The windows are primarily 3-light Crittal style, with continuous sill bands that meet at the angles of the triangular bays. Original steel windows remain in place on the north-east and central west ranges, while other windows were replaced with UPVC windows of a similar design around 1992. The main entrance on Osnaburgh Terrace has been altered, but there is a subsidiary entrance on Albany Street featuring a well-crafted moulded doorcase with a figurative frieze, accessed by steps with an original cast-iron handrail. The building has a flat roof with projecting eaves. The interior has not been inspected.
