Description
The Albany Health and Fitness Club, originally built as the Mission Church of St Bede, is a church that dates back to around 1877. Designed by C.R. Baker King, it was restored and converted into a health and fitness club around 1989. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slated roof.
The structure includes a gabled three-storey corner block with two and a half windows on the south facade, while the west facade has one and a half windows and a single-storey, four-window wing. The south facade is gabled and showcases two-light plate tracery windows on the ground floor, a single window with three pointed lights on the top floor, and a stone niche to the left, along with sill and arch strings. A tall slab chimney-stack is also present.
The main entrance on the west facade is hooded and has two small single pointed lights above it. To the left, there are two-light windows with pointed lights on both the ground and second floors, with the top floor featuring a small gable. The wing has two-light trefoil-headed transom and mullion windows. A toothed brick cornice is located at the eaves level, and there is a slated dormer with three pointed lights and trefoil arched barge boards. The interior has been altered and includes 20th-century stained glass.
