Description
Numbers 11, 12, and 15-19 form a terrace of seven houses, originally symmetrical, now disrupted by a 20th-century insertion. They stand on the north side of Fitzroy Square and were built around 1827-1828. The houses are constructed of stucco, with a rusticated finish to the ground floor. Most have slate mansard roofs with dormers.
The houses are four storeys high with attics and basements, each having three windows. The two bays at each end of the terrace project forward. The entrance to Number 11 is on the Fitzroy Street return, and the entrance to Number 19 is on the Conway Street return. The ground floor openings are round-arched and linked by impost bands. Doorways have pilaster-jambs supporting cornice heads, above fanlights and panelled doors. The windows are sash windows set in shallow, plain stucco recesses. The upper storeys have square-headed, recessed sash windows. Continuous cast-iron balconies are present at first-floor level. A plain sill band runs along the second floor, and the main cornice is enriched at third-floor level, topped with a blocking course above the attic floor.
The return elevation to Number 11 has a plain stucco ground floor, a prostyle portico with a Doric entablature, a round-arched doorway with panelled double doors, and round-arched windows flanking the doorway. The upper floors are of brick with four windows, blind except for those directly above the portico. A two-storey, single-window extension is attached. The return elevation to Number 19 also has a rusticated stucco ground floor, a similar prostyle portico with Doric entablature, a round-arched doorway with pilaster-jambs carrying cornice-head, fanlight and double panelled doors, and round-arched windows on each side set in shallow, plain stucco recesses with impost bands. The upper floors are brick and have three windows, all blind except for one over the portico. A single-storey, four-window extension is attached.
The interior was not inspected.
Attached to the terrace are cast-iron railings with tasselled spearhead finials. The houses complement nearby Adam-style buildings, although are distinct in design.
