Description

A terrace of twenty houses, numbered 21 to 40, forming the west side of Bedford Place. The houses date from around 1815 and were designed by James Burton. They are built of multi-coloured stock brick with rusticated stucco ground floors, and have a stucco sill band at the third-floor level. The houses are arranged over four storeys and have basements. Each house originally had three windows. The end bays at numbers 21-23 and 38-40, and the central bays at numbers 29-32, slightly project forward. They each feature wide double doors, with number 27 having a window in place of a doorway. Gauged brick flat arches, painted red, are above the recessed sash windows, some of which retain their original glazing bars. Continuous cast-iron balconies are present at the first-floor level. The houses have parapets. The interiors were not inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with urn finials mark the areas, and some houses have area overthrows.
