Description
Numbers 39 to 47 and 49 to 62, Doughty Street, Camden, is a terrace of 23 houses, built in phases between approximately 1792 and 1820, by John Wigg, George Slaton, and John Wilson. Number 48 is listed separately, and number 62 was rebuilt in 1974 to match the original. The houses are constructed mainly of multi-coloured stock brick, with some evidence of tuck pointing, and number 45 is painted. A plain stucco sill band runs across the front. The roofs are slate, with dormers, except for numbers 53 to 55 and 62.
Nos. 39 to 47, 49 to 52 and 56 to 61 are three storeys with attics and dormers; No. 39 has three windows, plus a fourth blind window, and a three-window return to Guilford Street. The doorways have round arches with panelled or recessed pilaster-jambs, cornice heads, patterned fanlights, and panelled doors. Nos. 44 to 47, 49, 51 and 52 have doorways with stucco surrounds, while Nos. 57 to 61 feature Greek Doric engaged columns supporting cornice heads with guttae. Windows are mostly 2-pane sashes with gauged brick flat arches. Cast-iron balconies are present on the first-floor windows of Nos. 49, 52, 56, 57, and 60. Stucco cornices and blocking courses are present on most houses, except No. 39. Original lead rainwater heads and pipes are largely intact. The interiors were not inspected.
Nos. 53 to 55 and 62 are four storeys with basements. Nos. 53 to 54 have round-arched doorways with moulded jambs and lion-head stops, cornice tops, and patterned radial fanlights. No. 55 features a projecting round-arched, rusticated stucco portico with a cornice and a later 19th-century doorway and patterned, half-glazed door and overlight. No. 62 has a return with a projecting Doric porch, part-glazed doors, and a patterned fanlight. Windows have gauged brick flat arches, with first-floor balconies made of cast iron. A cornice, continuous with the rest of the terrace, runs at third-floor level. Interiors were not inspected, but numbers 53 to 55 are noted to have stick baluster stairs.
The terrace is accompanied by attached cast-iron railings with urn finials to the areas.
