Description

The monument to James Selby is a simple square-cut stone cross set on three square steps at the head of his grave plot, which is enclosed on three sides by posts and chains. The cross itself is unadorned, but the upper two steps feature inscriptions: ‘In memory of James William Selby, who died 14th Dec 1888 in his 46th year’ and ‘This monument was erected to the memory of James W Selby, the noted whip and proprietor of the Old Times coach as a mark of esteem by his many coaching friends.’ The lowest step is decorated with a relief of a horsewhip and post-horn, representing Selby's profession. Each post at the foot of the grave is embellished with a single inverted horseshoe.
