Description

This building, located at 61 Carey Street, is a Grade II listed bank constructed in 1865 by F.W. Porter, originally serving as the Union Bank of London. It features a Portland stone facade and a slate roof, showcasing a stately and richly detailed High Renaissance design. The structure consists of three storeys, a basement, and a dormered attic.

The Chancery Lane side has a four-window wide frontage with a splayed corner entrance bay, while the Carey Street front is twelve windows wide, featuring central and terminal advanced pavilions. The corner entrance is accentuated with an aedicule. The Chancery Lane facade includes a three-storey loggia with semicircular arched windows framed by coupled columns in successive Tuscan, Ionic, and Corinthian orders. The Carey Street front follows a similar theme but employs coupled pilasters instead. The first floor windows are arcaded, and the terminal pavilions are designed as loggias.

The central pavilion is two storeys tall, topped with stone ball finials on the cornice blocking course. A heavy main cornice and entablature support semicircular, pedimented dormers above. The property is also adorned with fine heavy cast iron area railings. Inside, the original banking hall retains rich Renaissance detailing that is largely intact.
