Description
Numbers 1-29 and the attached screen on Sicilian Avenue are a shopping parade with offices, originally designed as flats, built between 1906 and 1910 by architect R.J. Worley for the Bedford Estate. The building is constructed of red brick with white terracotta dressings and features five storeys with fourteen and a half window bays, including a projecting oriel window on the return to Bloomsbury Square.
The ground floor has later 20th-century shopfronts that are separated by Corinthian columns on plinths, which support an entablature with a plain terracotta frieze at the second-floor level. There are pilasters at either end. The first floor showcases four and two-light square-headed casement windows with mullions, along with an oriel window on the fourth bay from Southampton Row. The second, third, and fourth floors are adorned with canted transom and mullion bay windows, flanked by two-light transom and mullion windows, as well as bowed oriel windows that rise from the second floor. The end bays feature two-light windows, all with small leaded panes, some displaying shields. The projecting oriel spans seven lights, with transoms and mullions, extending from the second to the fourth floor. Below this, there is an arched entrance supported by four large brackets that hold up a cornice. The building is topped with a projecting modillion cornice and a balustrade, along with tall slab chimneys.
The interiors have not been inspected. Attached to No. 29 is a screen that spans across the Avenue, featuring two Ionic columns on plinths that support an entablature inscribed with the words "Sicilian Avenue" on the frieze, topped by a balustrade with urns on the two central piers.
Numbers 1-29 form a cohesive architectural development with several nearby buildings, including Nos 6-20 (even) Sicilian Avenue, Nos 15-23 (odd) Southampton Row, Nos 25-35 (odd) and 35A Southampton Row, and Nos 1-6 Vernon Place.
