Description
The Kingsway Tram Subway, specifically the northern section, is a tram subway built between 1904 and 1906 by the London County Council for their tramways. The tunnel is lined with white glazed brick and retains its original cobbles and tram rails. It features a granite-clad portal and surrounds, topped with cast-iron railings. The entrance to the tunnel is square in section and was heightened between 1929 and 1931 to accommodate double-decker vehicles. At the south end of the surviving section, there is a cast and wrought-iron gas lamp stand that incorporates the monogram 'LCC' at its base.
Historically, the subway originally extended from the Embankment to Holborn and was constructed as part of the original layout of Kingsway by the London County Council; it was closed in 1952. The southern end was adapted into a traffic underpass in 1964 and is not included in this listing. The northern section retains significant streetscape value due to the quality of its granite construction and ironwork decoration, and it is of particular historical interest as the only underpass specifically designed for trams.
