Description
Numbers 13-24 and attached railings form a terrace of twelve houses built between approximately 1821 and 1832 as part of Mornington Crescent. Constructed by I Bryant for the Southampton Estate, the houses are stuccoed with rusticated ground floors, or yellow stock brick with rusticated stucco ground floors. The terrace is symmetrical, with slightly projecting end bays at numbers 13 & 14 and 23 & 24.
The houses are four storeys high with basements. They each have two windows, with number 13 having a three-window blind return. The ground floor features round-arched openings; the sash windows of the end houses are in shallow recesses. Numbers 13, 16, 20 & 21 have pointed and margin glazing. Most doorways have three-quarter Doric columns supporting cornice heads, fanlights (with patterned glass at numbers 19 & 23), and panelled doors. Numbers 13 and 24 have entrances on the returns. The first-floor windows have recessed sashes; the end house windows are architraved, while the others feature gauged brick flat arches, some of which have been reddened. Continuous cast-iron balconies are present on the first floors. A main cornice runs at the third-floor level, though this is missing from numbers 14 & 15. A cornice and blocking course appear above the third floor, but the cornice is missing from numbers 14 & 15. The interiors have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with spearhead finials run along the areas.
