Description

Barclays Bank is a former parsonage, now functioning as a bank, built in the early 19th century and refronted in the early 20th century for the London and South-Western Bank. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and stands three storeys tall with basements. It has a double-fronted design featuring five windows that follow the original building's fenestration arrangement. The architecture is in the Baroque style, characterized by a projecting portico with fluted pilasters, an entablature, and a broken, scrolled pediment adorned with reclining supporters that carry a coat of arms extending into a segmental pediment. Stone balls are placed on pedestals at the corners. The early 20th-century windows are architraved, with the first floor featuring broken scrolled pediments that have central fluted details and triangular pediments, along with a continuous stone balustraded balcony supported by large brackets flanking the ground floor windows. The second floor showcases scrolled keystones alternating with enriched carved panels. A projecting dentil cornice and balustrade with dies topped by urns are present, except for the penultimate bays, which have scrolled pediments. The interior banking hall was completely refitted in the late 20th century.
