Description

Russell House (Number 71) and Leighton House (Number 73) are a pair of semi-detached houses built in the early 19th century. Number 71 features a verandah extension from 1890 designed by CFA Voysey. The houses are constructed of stucco with slate roofs and have tall brick chimney stacks. They stand three storeys high with basements, each having two windows and three window returns. The outer bays project and are gabled, with architraving that gives the appearance of broken pediments.

The entrances are located on the returns: Number 71 has an elliptical arched entrance in the verandah extension, featuring casements with small panes, while Number 73 has a square-headed doorway set in an arched recess with a cornice. The central bays have recessed sashes, with Number 73 having a camber arched window. The ground and first floors have outer bays with casements that include margin glazing, and the first floor features cast-iron balconies. The second-floor outer bays have round arched windows with margin glazing and radial fanlight heads.

The interiors have not been inspected. Historically, Voysey's verandah extension is noted as his earliest surviving work according to Pevsner.
