Description
A pair of semi-detached houses, Numbers 21 and 23, were built between 1881 and 1882 by Henry Legg for Edward Gotto. The houses are constructed of red brick with moulded brick panels, sandstone and granite dressings, coved moulded plaster eaves, and a brown tiled roof. They are three storeys high with an attic, featuring a double row of dormers. The original windows retain ornamental glazing and coloured glass in the upper lights. Prominent chimney stacks have ribbed flanks and moulded caps. Cast-iron straining arches inscribed with "F" and the date "1882" connect Numbers 21 and 23 to Numbers 25 and 27. Number 21 bears a sandstone tablet inscribed "1 FOLEY TERRACE," and has a sandstone entrance porch with a balustrade over an arched doorway flanked by cartouches. A three-storey bay projection with a pitched octagonal roof, topped by a weathervane, is also present, and a Venetian window on the first floor has a carved keystone depicting a man's head. Number 23 is inscribed "2 FOLEY AVENUE" and has a projecting frontispiece of gauged brick with balustrades at the first and second floor levels above pilastered entrance. The interiors have not been inspected. The houses, along with Numbers 25 and 27, form a prominent group beside the listed Chalybeate well, also designed by Legg.
