Description
Number 40 is an early 19th century terraced house with a late 19th century projecting porch. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with a stucco band at the first-floor sill level. The porch is built of grey brick and the roof is slated with dormers. The house has three storeys, attics, and a semi-basement. The round-arched doorway has a keystone and is fitted with a panelled door featuring a radial patterned fanlight. Recessed sash windows are set within gauged brick flat arches. A parapet tops the facade. The interior has not been inspected. Attached to the property are cast-iron railings, complete with bud finials, set on low brick walls with stone-capped gate piers and a cast-iron gate. A plaque indicates that this was the home of the artist John Constable from 1827 to 1837. The building is designated at Grade II* for its historical associations.
