Description

Klippan House is a large detached house built in 1881 by Ewan Christian for his own residence. It was constructed by Cornish and Gaymer. The house is of red brick with some tile hanging, and features dressings of Lascelles patent concrete, including a first-floor band with incised text that is now painted over. It has coved eaves to a steeply pitched, swept tiled roof, with hip ends, hipped dormers, and finials. The large brick stacks have arrises and cornices in multiple planes.

The plan is irregular, with numerous projections from a basic rectangular form, including an external staircase leading to a first-floor tower entrance.

The exterior is two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a three-and-a-half-story tower and a pyramidal roof. It has stone mullioned windows, some with transoms. A projecting bay to the left of the tower entrance supports a first-floor wooden trelliswork balcony with a hipped roof. Contemporary ironwork is a notable feature, including basement window guards, a "rope" handrail to the exterior staircase, and furniture for the front door.

The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to have good oak-panelled doors in panelled reveals, two carved fireplaces in an Arts and Crafts-related style, and a few original windows with patterned leadwork and painted texts. There is high-quality joinery throughout, including in the basement where stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are present.

The house is of particular interest as it was designed by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners' Consulting Architect during the later 19th century.
