Description

Foley House is a detached house, likely built around 1771 by Edward Helling, although it is reputed to have been constructed in 1698 for J. Duffield, the first manager of the Spa. The house features brown brick construction and a slated roof, standing three storeys high with a basement.

The front facade has a wide three-window splayed projecting centre bay, flanked by early 18th-century single window wings. The north-west wing is two storeys tall with a gable end designed as an open pediment, and there is a further two-storey extension set back. The south-east wing has three storeys, with the top storey added in the 19th century.

The central doorway is round-arched and features an open dentil pediment supported by Roman Doric columns with dentil capitals. It has a patterned fanlight and panelled doors, which are flanked by sash windows. The ground floor wings include Venetian windows. The upper floors have gauged red brick flat arches above slightly recessed sashes with exposed boxing, and the first floor of the splayed bay has a cast-iron balcony. A plain band runs along the second floor level, topped by a parapet. The south-west garden front displays brick bands at the first and second floor levels, although many of the windows have been altered.

The interior has not been inspected but is noted to retain some early 19th-century features.
