Description

A large detached villa, dating to circa 1868, originally designed by J.S. Nightingale and later expanded by Edward Gotto around 1876. Construction was carried out by Charles Till. In 1951, the building was subdivided into maisonettes. It is built of yellow stock brick with red brick and stone dressings and diaper work. The roof is tiled and slated, featuring ornate projecting brackets, tall ornate chimney stacks, a tower with a truncated pyramidal roof (originally with cresting), and round-arched dormers. Elaborate masonry finials are positioned on the corners. The building has an irregular plan, exhibiting an eccentric blend of Gothic, Italianate, and other architectural styles. It is mainly two storeys high, with a four-storey central tower. The fenestration is irregular, and the entrances have been altered. Ground floor windows are stone canted bays, while upper floor windows are round-arched. A plaque with the initials "EG" is located on the north side of the house. The interior has not been inspected, but surviving features include Minton tiles, serpentine, and Plymouth rock. The tower features a good oval staircase. An attached stone-capped brick garden wall with a dentil cornice (originally with cast-iron cresting) is present. A gabled gateway leading to No. 19 Well Road features a pointed arch opening with a keystone inscribed "Lion House" and carved stone lion-like creatures on either side of the gable. The gateway's base has paired inset colonnettes and enriched corbels, supporting panelled double doors. Edward Gotto was a successful civil engineer and developer of land in this area of Hampstead.
