Description

This is a terrace of twelve houses, dating from approximately 1835 to 1844, located on the north side of Swinton Street in Camden. The terrace includes the Swinton Hotel, which occupies numbers 22 and 24. The houses are three storeys high with basements. Numbers 22 to 26 have had 20th-century attics added, housed within slated mansard roofs with dormers. Each house has two windows.

Numbers 4 to 22 are constructed of yellow stock brick with rusticated stucco to the ground floors, and a plain first-floor sill band. Number 14 has a painted ground floor. Numbers 10 and 12 slightly project from the main facade. The ground floor windows are round-arched. The doorways have architraved surrounds with pilaster jambs supporting cornice heads; some are topped with patterned fanlights and have panelled doors. The first-floor windows are architraved sashes, with many having margin lights. First floors have cornices and cast-iron balconies. The building is finished with a parapet.

Numbers 24 and 26 are also built of yellow stock brick with rusticated stucco to the ground floors and a plain first-floor sill band. They have segmental-arched doorways with fanlights; number 24 has pilaster jambs supporting cornice heads to the surround, while number 26 features fluted quarter columns. The recessed sash windows have gauged brick flat arches and glazing bars. First floors have cast-iron balconies. The facade is finished with stucco cornices and blocking courses. The interiors were not inspected during the listing process.

Attached to the terrace are cast-iron railings with tasselled spearhead finials to the front areas.
