Description

The lodge at the Swain's Lane entrance to Waterlow Park and Lauderdale House dates from the mid-19th century. It is built of stucco and features string courses at the first-floor sill level and below the parapet. The building is two storeys high and has a double front with three windows, although the right-hand window is now blocked. Designed in a Gothic style, the entrance has a hoodmould and a traceried panelled door. The square-headed windows are topped with hoodmoulds and arched lights, and the building is capped with a battlemented parapet. There is a gabled right-hand return that includes a single-storey extension with a three-light canted bay window. The lodge is topped with tall, enriched terracotta "Tudor" chimneys.

The lodge is accompanied by elaborate cast-iron railings, gate piers, and gates. The railings, which sit on a stepped wall, feature a foliated scroll design and a row of spikes above. The granite piers are adorned with vermiculated panels and wrought-iron finials at the base of the foot and double vehicle gates. The gates themselves have an intricate circular foliated design, with central lion mask roundels set within a rectangular frame that includes panels of a cruciform pattern at the base.
