Description

This mid-19th century lodge house was built for the Bedford Estate to serve Oakley Square. The building is constructed of stucco with rusticated quoins. It is a single storey and features a three-window canted bay with architraved sash windows. To the left is a square-headed entrance with a panelled door. A dentil cornice and blocking course run around the entire building. Above the bay is a circular plaque displaying the Bedford family coat of arms, supported by scrolled consoles. The returns feature two architraved sash windows, and the garden front has a bay window similar to the main facade. The interior was not inspected during listing. Originally, the lodge house flanked gates intended to restrict access to the square; the gates were removed in 1893. Oakley Square itself was developed incrementally between 1845 and 1859.
