Description
Cowslip Pightle (Number 2) is a Grade II listed building located in Haverhill. Originally known as Hazel Stub Farmhouse, this hall house dates back to the 15th century and has been incorporated as a service range into a later house built in the late 19th century, with subdivision occurring in the 20th century. The exterior features rendered brick and a timber-framed rear, topped with plain tile roofs and two brick stacks on the rear slope.
The original house comprises four bays, with the two-bay hall now divided between the two later houses at the front. The building has a two-storey, three-bay gabled front with a central doorway under a gabled porch. Above the doorway is a gabled half dormer fitted with a 3/3 horned sash window. The left gable has one 3/3 horned sash window on each floor, while the right gable features one late 20th-century imitation sash window on each floor. The rear includes casements and sashes of late Georgian design.
Inside, the close studded timber-frame is intact up to the wall plate, with timber-frame surviving only in the rear wall on the first floor. The left bay, likely the upper end of the hall, contains a stopped and chamfered spine beam and closely spaced heavy floor joists. An inserted stack from the 16th or 17th century is present, and half of the hall contains a stair with a jowled post prominently exposed on the first-floor landing. The lower end of the hall, located within No. 1, has beams and joists that have been repaired in places, along with a rebuilt 17th-century fireplace.
This building was first listed on May 9, 1973, as Hazel Stub Farmhouse, but the name was amended on November 19, 1993, to reflect its current designation as No. 1 Hazel Stub Cottages and Cowslip Pightle.
