STANSFIELD Large Aisled Barn at Stansfield Hall

GV II

Barn. C15 with C20 alterations. Weatherboarded timber-frame with corrugated sheet mansard roof. Brick plinth. 5 bays with aisles on both sides. Raised doorway to north and south elevations, the latter infilled. Entrance to west elevation. Window opening to east elevation. INTERIOR. Massive aisle posts with braces to tie beams and arcade posts. Aisles incorporate a passing brace running from the sole plate in the aisle to the outside of the arcade post and halved over the aisled tie. Arcade posts are jowled and curve in towards the nave. Bracing from arcade posts to underside of arcade ties and underside of arcade plates. Later studs inserted between original aisled studs, possibly on the removal of wattle and daub panelling. Evidence of latter between aisle studs remains shown by groove to the underside of aisle wall plate running its full length. Part of a good farmstead group with small aisled barn at Stansfield Hall (qv) and cartshed and granary at Stansfield Hall(qv).
