Description
Church Cottage is a house dating from the mid-16th century. It has 1½ storeys and three bays, constructed from timber framing and plaster, with some simple decorative pargetting visible. There are single-storey lean-to extensions on both the east and west sides, partly built in brick. The roof is thatched, with a half-hipped design on the west side and a fully hipped design on the east.
The layout follows a basic two-roomed end chimney plan, with a single room above that has been divided into two. Inside, heavy framing is exposed, with no middle rail on the side walls and reversed braces at the corners. There is one cross-entry door featuring mutilated spandrels that is still in use. The fireplace has a wide cambered lintel, and there is an open truss with long arched braces, although the tie-beam has been cut through. Several original window openings are blocked, but diamond mullions can still be seen in the former west gable wall. The house is positioned sideways to the road, situated down a steep slope.
